Laptop Outlet offers a large selection of refurbished laptops that have built in 9 Pin RS-232 Serial Interface useful for com port connection & general diagnostic. I think the latest machine with a built-in serial port was the T43. The dock for the T60, T61, etc did have one, but not the basic machine. I use an express card port on my W540. I need a 'real' serial port with a real UART that can map to the physical addersses that date back to the 1980's, because. Laptops with built-in RS232 are almost unheard of now, except for POSSIBLY workstation-grade machines like the Dell Precision series. Even those are unlikely to have it. It sounds like your best options are: 1) A new laptop, sticking with the USB-to-serial converter but hopefully the new laptop's ports.
Are there any computer vendors (like Dell, Lenovo, or.) that still sell laptops with an internal serial port?
Hp Laptop With Serial Port Rs232
We are using several modem and other kind of box at work that have to be used (and/or programmed) with serial port (RS232, DB9, .). We tried many usb/pcmcia serial adapter which run fine when used to load programs on the boxes but not with modems. The protocol behind the RTC connection (with modem) need timer we are not able to reach when using an adapter (maybe until we find a very good adapter), and that leads to my question.

My brand new Dell Latitude E5500 has a serial port on the left side of it. Alas, it has no parallel port.

eleven81I have also just started looking for a new laptop with a serial port.
I can confirm eleven81's answer that Dell is still selling the Latitude E5500, however that machine is limited to Core 2 Duo processors. If you go to the newer E6410 and E6510 you gain access to i5 and i7 processors, but they have dropped the serial port.
In following Tim's answer, the Fujitsu Lifebook E780 also has a serial port, but also comes with i5 and i7 processors - albeit at several hundred $$ more than the E5500's.
The Panasonic Toughbook series all seem to have serial ports, but with different processors. The 52 has Core 2 Duo or Core i5 processor. The 19, 30 and 74 have Core 2 Duo. And the base price of the Toughbooks also seems above the other two vendors top prices. Dark night of the soul saint john of the cross pdf.
Peter MPeter MThe e-series of Dells have a legacy port (serial/parallel) adapter available, and the elite docking station offers serial + parallel as well.
All Toshiba Tecra A11 and Tecra S11 models come with a built in serial port.
Panasonic Toughbooks as well.
HP just release a nice Notebook with serial port and the option to use an i5 or i7 processor. It's the HP Probook 6540b Notebook PC. I just bought one for much cheaper than the Fujitsu and the Panasonic and it has a lot of the perks/options you could want. Julia at customer service did a great job hooking me up with the best possible configuration (and also threw in a nice discount).. Call her (800) 888.5858 ext. 7719068. She definately knows her stuff!! Here's what I got with it..

Laptop Cu Port Serial Rs232
Hey folks,
I've worked in IT for about 21 years.. and am looking for some advice. Simply put, I need to find a range of laptops that have serial (rs232) ports. Currently the HP Probook 650 G2 is the laptop in use, but I'm looking for other options.
For those who will jump this one, using a USB to SERIAL adapter is not an option. If you still need reasons.. voltage to specific pins, emulation over the port, processing speed cannot keep up with PLC logic.. etc. It is not an option because it's been tried before.. always with mixed results.
The site says: 'and then. The proxy server is refusing connectionsFirefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.Ive tried the suggestions on the viewer HELP but to no avail.I have made a moxilla/firefox account but never have i been asked for a username. Successfully downloaded firefox on mac 10.7 but when i open it a get a drop down from the tool box stating:Authentication Required: The proxy moz=proxy://207.244.89.108.443 is requesting a username and password. Free download anonymox for firefox. I have tried my email address but no luck. Also i should mention i am in China, so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Does anyone know of a site where this can be filtered across manufacturers? I attempted newegg filtering, but the rs232 is so rare that it was not listed.
I know there are limited options for this.. which is why I'm asking if anyone has seen any.
Thank you for your time!
EDIT:
As others in this thread have asked (and I really should have listed this from the get-go..):
The laptop performance IS a factor. It is being used to process SQL data on marine vessels with very low bandwidth communication. Mostly this will be bypassed by using a solid state disk as the operations are very disk intensive.
The reason that it must be a laptop is mobility.. believe me, I'd take anything else if it were possible.
CPU needs are i3/i5 (really don't need i7.. can probably get by with just the i3 honestly).
I am familiar with the Panasonic Toughbook CF52 & 53.. and disagree with the 'Tough' part. I used to support a fleet of them & they are ok laptops, but they are only a little bit tough.
The Latitude w/ docking may be an option.. but it is a pretty heavy price increase from where we are now.
Thank you all for taking the time to post your thoughts. I appreciate you taking the time to do this.
EDIT2:
For now - we are going to stick with the systems we are using.. It is difficult to find a better price for a dedicated rs232. I am sending a guy out to test one of the higher end USB to RS232 and also to test an express card with RS232.
Thank you all for taking the time out of your day to post here & express your thoughts.
